We are looking to invest in a reach stacker, having been convinced of its usefulness for our business. However, we are not in a position to make an informed decision since we do not know what different kinds of reach stackers there are, how many different brands there are, and what their USPs are.

We are based in the United Arab Emirates, and will primarily be working with 40'dc and 40'hc containers.

We would greatly appreciate guidance and assistance in the matter. What makes a good reach stacker? What are the leading reach stacker  brands? What reach stacker is a better bet for the harsh hot and humiod conditions of the UAE (The temperatures can go up to 45-48 degree celsius in summer) ?

Thanks and Best Regards/nkq

Nadeem,

You can find a full Reach stackers manufacturer list on the website: http://www.portvision.eu/BrowseKb/1

A reach stacker should have no problem in handling 40'hc (9'6'') and 40'dc (8'6'') containers because the reach stacker can work with a top pick spreader, so the spreader just needs to be suitable 40' containers. Telescopic spreaders (the most common option) will work on 20' and 40' ISO containers and some will even work on 45' ISO containers too.

A good reach stacker would be the one who adapts to your container handling needs. This means that if your maneuver space is limited, if you need it for a specific activity or if you have to stack containers in a certain display, a deep study of your operation should be performed in order to determine the most appropriate machine to your needs.

Maintenance is another key factor. Oil studies, filter changes and other performance tasks should be performed regularly. Having a manufacturer representative in UAE is important but be aware that not all the brands have official representation in the area.

Dear Sir you can try RST 45 reachstacker which can handle 45t container in the first row and 35t container in the 2nd row. It is made in India.

time has passed,  i imagine you purchased a reachstacker,,, are you happy with your choice?

i am a factory trained sisu man/ then became kalmar, technical advisor, kalmar solutions

i was in love with the sisu pumps, the ability to raise up the lifting spool milliamps and the simplicity of the PNP proximity switch...the machine was a beast and began as a organized relay machine

i wont start commenting on the swedish kalmars if you need someone to make the slow pigs work better, stronger, i have some suggestions.... the vibrating damges of swinging weight must be greased, please dont forget the preventative routines

 i was port babysitter,

fine tuning the reachstackers and empties, i love the pnp sisu, and then kalmar solutions of their npn eprom machines,, the steering must be a large single steering cylinder when the yard is tight or your drivers will brake of steering king pins.

i prefer pumps that are not variable axial displacement, they would be adjusted in stages, are costly and hard to increment tto 350 bar. difficult to see when one inline is not making pressures to support the sequence, etc

my group built sisu rtgs from tamphere finland, they have good product with very little failure other than a proximity switch or perhaps a siemens module, saw it once,, the headblock antisway cabling is useful

best regards,

john quinterohidrogenoeu@netzero.net

we have many rtg running in south america, i was port babysitter for 2 years.

my choice of reachstacker is the finnish sisu/kalmar because of the pumps and the pnp relays, now the contmaster has a very nice 1 eprom package that handles the toplift, unlike the fantuzzi joystick burned contactor / relay box output.

my rtg choice is sisu( Kalmar merger)  perhaps know we can say cargotec... but it comes from finland , assembled in poland, electric genset, simovis step 7, coros op25 profibus communication thru out, headblock antisway etc.

contact emilio.martinez@cargotec.com  tell him john you spoke with john his technical advisor

best regards, john

nadeem, open the yard up if possible so driver can turn without full steering stroke, this save the rea end and tires

give them room to move not in tight corridors, a few feet more,

greaing is very import, verify the auto systems and delivery to the last grease point,

in trainyards , we put the grease on a long pole and hit the slider pads manualy, they work an alfull lot in the many chicago trainyards

i luv the contmaster, pnp and think the kalmar npn pumps and eproms are just not necessary to deliver the shipping movements, driver just dont get in touch with what to watch, the simplicty of a good axle overload is enough to lock out controls to the bypass precautinary button, calibrate and trust the overload needle,

train the men on yard extendsion till lock occurs,,, then what to do.

of cours a toplift with pile slope is nice to have

of course leaky boom cylinder seals in swedish design was better whenit came time to change seal because seal and valve were on the open end of boom and one could simply leave cylinder in machine and disarm pin and vale to access the cylinder headblock packing... whereas sisu made one take out the complete cylinder to work the packing

swedish kalmar to complicated with 3  eprom box inputs and outputs, load cell in cylinders an overkill when the machine a good sisu overload sensor displays and stops a heavy move while check boom distancethat complicated boom string potentiometer needs calibration, and is another moving part to fail, the driver doesnt need to know the extended meter lengths , just if it is safely diplaying overload green zone to white zone to red lock out..

none complicate, good ground wires on the terminal blocks for a pnp function, one small green wire oxidizing is hardly enough to keep a toplift from have ghost and maybe it works.

best regards

john
